Lower Elementary Students

The Lower Elementary 1 teacher is Mrs. Patricia Howarth and she is assisted by Mrs. Maggie Foster. Lower Elementary students enjoy physical education, art, music, and computers, plus trips to Losner Park five days a week, in addition to their curriculum of reading, math, science, and history. Mrs. Patricia Pendergrass Howarth has been a Montessori teacher for over three decades. She moved to Homestead at the age of two and has been married to her husband Bruce for over 30 years. She has three children—Andrew, Amanda, Jacob and three grandchildren—Daria, Dexter, and Alessa (who all attend Atala). She earned her bachelor’s degree in sociology and religion from Mercer University in Macon, GA, has Montessori credentials from COMETT in Columbus, Ohio, and additional training from the Lindamood-Bell center in San Luis Obisbo, CA. Mrs. Maggie Foster has an AA degree in Elementary Education from Miami Dade College. She has been Mrs. Howarth’s assistant the past 10 years with a total of 16 years work experience in Montessori education. Her children Julie, Brian, and William attended Montessori schools. Maggie along with her husband Jerry, are lifetime residents of Homestead. Maggie comes from two pioneer families who settled the Homestead area in the early 1900’s. In her spare time Maggie enjoys music, dancing, camping, and traveling.
